and reduce selfish desires. |
This is the sublime learning that leads to joy and freedom from worry. |
Chapter 20 Different from Crowd Sage Investor
| Original |
Translation |
English |
Truth and falsehood, |
how different are they? |
True good and beauty versus fake evil and ugliness, |
where does the difference lie? |
The things that people fear |
do they also fear people? |
Oh, the vast wilderness! |
How many unresolved principles there are. |
The crowd loves to join the hustle and bustle, |
like attending a grand sacrificial feast, |
like climbing a tower in spring to gaze upon the view. |
But I alone am placid and serene, as if my senses haven't opened, |
like a newborn infant who has not yet learned to smile. |
Drifting with the wind, |
as if I have no home to return to. |
The crowd hopes for wealth and surplus, |
but I alone wish to cast off my burdens. |
This foolish heart of mine, |
how chaotic and ignorant it seems! |
Things that worldly people see with clarity, |
I alone seem to be dim and drowsy about. |
Things that worldly people see with sharp distinction, |
I alone seem to be kept in the dark about. |
Everyone has lofty ambitions, |
I alone am stubborn, unrefined, and poorly informed. |
I am serene, like the great sea at the horizon, |
yet I possess an unstoppable life force. |
The reason I am different from the crowd |
is because I cherish receiving nourishment from the Dao. |
Chapter 21 Laws of All Things
| Original |
Translation |
English |
The channel of unity between nature and human body contains the consciousness of all beings; |
only that which aligns with the Great Dao can be recognized and followed. |
The Dao, as the law governing the unknown world, |
can only exist in an elusive and indistinct form. |
Within this state that is both real and illusory, |
one can see the images of all things. |
Within this state of seeming-to-be and seeming-not-to-be, |
one can perceive the fundamental nature of all things. |
When consciousness becomes profound and the self is extinguished, |
one can grasp the essence within. |
The reality of this essence is beyond doubt; |
this is the insight you can have absolute faith in. |
From ancient times to the present, |
this method of realizing the Dao has never been lost. |
Through it, one can understand the laws of all living things. |
How do I know the laws of all living things? |
It is through this very method of insight. |
Chapter 22 Fewer Desires 少则得 Investor Expectation
| Original |
Translation |
English |
To be bent is to form the most perfect world; |
a great curve appears like a straight line. |
Only by placing yourself in a low place can you become full; |
only by discarding old concepts can you innovate and renew. |
The fewer your desires, the easier it is to gain insight; |
the more your desires, the more you will feel confused. |
Therefore, the Sage holds to the One, |
and in this way becomes a model for the world. |
He does not cling to his own views, so he can see things clearly. |
He does not believe he is always right, so right and wrong are made manifest. |
He does not boast of his efforts, so he achieves success. |
He does not consider himself a sage, so he becomes a leader. |
Precisely because you do not compete with the world, |
the world in turn cannot compete with you. |
The ancient saying, "To be bent is to be made whole"— |
how could these be empty words? |
For one who has sincere faith in this Way, the world will belong to him. |
Chapter 23 Laws of Nature
| Original |
Translation |
English |
To issue few commands is to be in harmony with nature. |
A fierce wind does not last all morning; |
a sudden downpour does not last all day. |
Who does these things? |
This is the work of Heaven and Earth. |
If even the outbursts of Heaven and Earth cannot last long, |
how much less can those of a human being? |
Therefore, for those who live by the laws of nature: |
A person of the Dao is aligned with the Dao. |
A person of virtue is aligned with virtue. |
A person of loss is aligned with loss. |
One who is aligned with the Dao, the Dao is also glad to receive. |
From ancient times to the present, |
One who is aligned with virtue, virtue is also glad to receive. |
Through it, one can understand the laws of all living things. |
One who is aligned with loss, |
loss is also glad to receive. |
When a person lacks sincerity, |
there will naturally be those who do not trust them. |
Chapter 24 Human Nature 人性
| Original |
Translation |
English |
One whose feet don't grip the earth cannot know the feeling of standing firm. |
One who rides on another's shoulders cannot know the struggles of the walker. |
Clinging to one's own opinions prevents clear understanding. |
Believing one is always right obscures true wisdom. |
Forcing things through brute effort will lead to no success. |
Considering oneself a sage prevents one from becoming a true leader. |
If such a person were to align with the Dao, |
they would inevitably suffer from the flaw of being like "leftover food and a useless tumor." |
Some may find this viewpoint repulsive, |
but one who has attained the Dao transcends such states. |
Chapter 25 What is Dao
| Original |
Translation |
English |
There is a substance, formed from a unified chaos, |
born before Heaven and Earth existed. |
Oh, how silent and formless it is. |
It exists independently and is eternally unchanging; |
it moves in cycles without ever being exhausted. |
It can be considered the origin of all things in the world. |
I do not know what to call it, |
so I give it the character "Dao" (the Way). |
Forced to give it a name, I call it "the Great." |
"Great" means it is the unreachable past and future. |
This unreachable past and future can also be called "infinitely profound." |
One knows its profundity because one understands its cyclical nature. |
Therefore, the Dao is great, |
Heaven is great, |
Earth is great, |
and humanity is also great. |
In the universe there are four greats, |
and humanity is one of them. |
Humanity follows the laws of the Earth. |
The Earth follows the laws of Heaven. |
Heaven follows the laws of the Dao. |
The Dao follows the laws of Nature itself. |
Mindset
| Original |
Translation |
English |
Gravity is the foundation of what is light; |
Tranquility is the master of what is restless. |
Therefore, the Sage |
travels all day without ever leaving his heavy supply wagons. |
Even when surrounded by luxurious living, |
he is able to remain transcendent and detached. |
But alas, there are some rulers of ten thousand chariots |
who only know how to satisfy their own desires, treating the world and its people lightly. |
Through frivolity, they lose their moral foundation. |
Through restlessness, they lose their position of mastery. |
